Phycologica

  • Centrespace Gallery & Studios 6 Leonard Lane Bristol, England, BS1 1EA United Kingdom (map)

Phycologica is an interactive, immersive installation showcasing microalgae’s ability to sequester carbon through the animating power of breath. Exchanging breath with millions of microalgal cells, participants co-create a dynamic experience that animates a magical bioluminescent display driven by resonant frequencies. An evocative hydrophonic soundscape, combined with multi-sensory elements, creates a timeless, enveloping environment that invites awe at our living life-support system.

Throughout our time on Earth, algae have been vital to our existence and the evolution of complex life. This exhibition proposes a relearning of ancient ways of living with algae, building a sustainable future through mutualism and reciprocity. Shifting to an eco-consciousness, it sparks imagination for hopeful planetary futures, harnessing algae’s natural carbon-removal abilities for climate remediation.
