The Department was created by Nick Hand as a home for letterpress printing. Self-initiated projects sit alongside collaborations and commissions that combine Nick’s skills in design, photography and print; as well as his ability to bring together a mix of creative talent to deliver projects.

The printshop also offers workshops and courses in letterpress printing.

Nick has also recorded the lives of craftspeople, creating an ever-growing collection of conversations with people who have a passion for making. Often these journeys have been by bicycle. He has also combined his love of letterpress printing with bicycle journeys. Nick’s friend Robin Mather made a steel bicycle that carries an Adana 8×5 press (from adanaletterpress.co.uk). Nick has made many long distance journeys printing postcards and bookmarks.
